CHS ESL Curriculum & Philosophy

Our ESL Class Motto: Focus on your potential instead of your limitations.
~Alan Loy McGinnis~

My philosophy is to teach in the target language through the use of immersion, active conversation, visuals, concrete props, and technology using a variety of strategies with an emphasis on academic language. The more students hear and experience the language, the more they use the language! Fluency & increased vocabulary are also primary objectives in learning to speak English. I believe in the teaching and learning of the four modalities of language as one - speaking, listening, reading, and writing using academic content. At CHS, ESL is considered a content class where students meet daily and receive grades. ELs and those that have exited may request ESL Study Hall on their schedules for additional content support.

Our program follows Tennessee academic standards as designated for Collierville Schools combined with the  WIDA standards for English Language Learners. Based on their fluency level and English proficiency testing scores, students receive curriculum support from daily to several times weekly. It is my goal to work closely with each student’s content  teacher to ensure the success of our students. After testing English proficient, EL students are monitored for four years as transitional students before exiting the program.
