balancing equations that all the atoms from the reactant side of a chemical reaction to show up on the side sometimes you find chemical equations with atoms on both sides don't match up that's where you come in making the numbers of atoms out of correctly is called balancing an equation thing about balancing equations your goal is to make the atoms out of you can't change the makeup of any molecules whatever will I do  well you can't change molecules but you can add more of them basically coefficients can change the subscripts stay the same white and plain-old liquid water tetrafluoride is just a long way of saying see the fluorine atoms on the sure you do take another look do it do it now anyway let's count the atoms on both sides like there's one silicon atom to oxygen hydrogen and 1 flooring now on the other side we have one silicon one oxygen sturgeons and for Florence the two sides definitely don't match but we can make them match remember we can't change them add add more of them to balance things out start with the most complicated molecule and decide what coefficient would make the atoms match up on both sides in this chase the Silicon tetrafluoride needs some work we're going to need for fluorides on the reactant side so we put a 4 in front of hydrofluoric acid the flooring problem but the oxygens are still unbalanced and we made the hydrogens even worse let's try a 2 in front of the water molecule on the product side that gives us one silicon to oxygen for hydrogens and for fluorines looks like we have a match that's a balanced equation don't worry if it takes a while to balance some equations or if you have to try a few different coefficients sometimes it takes some trial-and-error and that's okay just stick with it don't give up until both sides
