CHS National Honor Society Requirements

 

The National Honor Society delights in recognizing students who have displayed academic excellence, honorable character, selfless service, and commendable leadership. Student applicants who exhibit these qualities may be anonymously selected by the principal’s faculty council and invited to become members. Completion of the National Honor Society application does not guarantee selection.

Membership Requirements:

1. Scholarship: an unrounded GPA of 95.0 or higher
2. Reputable character: discipline record and teacher evaluations
3. Leadership positions: inside and outside school
4. School activities: co-curriculars such as clubs, sports, and other activities
5. Service in the community: volunteer type opportunities
6. Outside Activities: non-school related jobs, sports, religious type activities
7. Awards and Honors: optional

 

Background:

The National Association of Secondary School Principals allows each school chapter to set a cumulative GPA requirement above their minimum cumulative GPA of an 85, a B, a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or the equivalent cumulative standard of excellence. The national office cannot require an affiliated chapter to lower a properly implemented cumulative GPA that is higher than the national minimum. After reviewing the National Honor Society criteria in schools of similar size in this area and across the country, the Collierville High School National Honor Society Council and the school administration established an unrounded 95.0, or higher GPA, requirement for the Collierville High School National Honor Society Chapter.

 

THE SPRING APPLICATION DATE HAS BEEN EXTENDED DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER. ALL OTHER DATES WILL REMAIN THE SAME THIS SEMESTER.

Spring Application Due Date: January 25, 2024.

  • Applications will not be accepted after 11:59 pm on January 25, 2024

 

Application Process:

Please note: Completion of the National Honor Society application does not guarantee selection.

Once applications are submitted, potential bias is avoided when applicant names are removed, and a random number is attributed to each candidate by the sponsors. All anonymous applications are then shared with the Collierville High School National Honors Society Council. The council reviews every application and votes to award or decline membership. Sponsors do not have an opinion or a vote but facilitate and maintain the integrity of the voting process by providing these anonymous applications. Council members vote solely based on the application contents and National Honors Society standards.

 

Application Vetting Process:

Dates for this process are available via mass Parent Square communication. The  process for application vetting takes about 1 month. 

 

Vetting Timeline:

  • Counselors: (GPA review & discipline record information)
  • Teacher Evaluations 
  • Council Evaluations – Student names are hidden from all council members. 
  • Council Meeting – Student names will continue to be hidden from council members. 
  • Acceptance/Denial Letters will be emailed as soon as the above process has been completed. If accepted, the invitation to the induction ceremony will be included. 
  • Sponsors facilitate the above process and do not have input in the selection process. 
  • Once selected, your $21 membership fee is due before induction. Payment information will be sent to your school email via "Schoolcash" soon after the acceptance notice. Please complete the process shortly after receiving the email to facilitate the CHS record keeping process.
  • Spring Induction Ceremony Date:  March 5, 2024 in the early evening.

Application Document:

  • Using the template provided below, create a Word document to submit a BULLETED list of your activities. Please separate by category as listed.
  • Provide a detailed account of your accomplishments in each activity. Do not be modest in your responses. Be thorough, but do not write in paragraph form. This is not an essay; complete sentences are not required.
  • You may include a short paragraph at the top of your application that explains how you can best contribute to Collierville High School’s National Honor Society. This information does not supersede the requirements list above.
  • DO NOT INCLUDE YOUR NAME IN THE BODY OF THE SUBMISSION

Special Application Notes: 

 I.  Character: The student of character

- takes criticism willingly and accepts recommendations graciously.

- consistently exemplifies desirable qualities of behavior (cheerfulness, friendliness, poise, stability).
- upholds principles of morality and ethics.
- complies with school regulations concerning property, programs, office, halls, etcetera.
- demonstrates the highest standards of honesty and reliability.

- observes instructions, rules, punctuality, and faithfulness both inside and outside the classroom.

- is a forerunner in school, work, and community activities.
- is thoroughly dependable when accepting responsibilities.

*** When filling out the application, please list all elected or appointed leadership positions you have held in school, work, or community activities. Only those positions in which you were directly responsible for leading or motivating others should be listed. Some examples include but are not limited to: elected student body position, class or club officer, committee chairperson, team captain, newspaper editor, work area manager, or community leader.

 

III. Co-Curricular Activities: The student who serves (CHS RELATED ONLY)

- is willing to uphold scholarship and maintain a loyal school attitude.

- volunteers dependable and well-organized assistance, is readily available, and is willing to sacrifice to offer assistance.
- cheerfully and enthusiastically renders any requested service to the school.
- is willing to represent the class or school during inter-class and inter-scholastic competition.
- accomplishes committee and staff work without complaint.
- shows courtesy by assisting visitors, teachers, and students.

School Activities: When filling out the application, please list all high school activities in which you have participated. Some examples may include but are not limited to: clubs, teams, musical groups, and major accomplishments.

 

IV.  Community Activities (SERVICE):

When filling out the application, please list community activities in which you have participated and note any major accomplishments in each. These should be activities outside of school in which you participated for the betterment of your community. Some examples may include but are not limited to: church groups, clubs outside of school, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, volunteer groups, or community art endeavors.


*You must include community activity contact information for verification. You may be asked to submit a clear picture of any additional certificates or letters detailing your participation to the NHS sponsors. Be as detailed as possible about each activity that you have participated in. This should include the service hours you have performed in each.

 
V.  Work Experience & Other Activities:

When filling out the application, please list all other paid or volunteer job experiences or activity involvement that is outside the school affiliated organizations. This may include sports or community activities, clubs outside of school such as boy Scouts or Girl Scouts, or community art endeavors.  

 

VI. Recognition & Awards (optional): 

This includes honors or recognitions pertinent to supporting your bid for a National Honor Society membership.
